Cycling Coach

WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOU

Whether you are a recreational cyclist wanting to complete your first Century ride, an aspiring cyclist looking to gain the fitness necessary for racing, or a seasoned racer dedicated to taking your fitness and results to an even higher level - I can implement a more scientific and structured training program to allow you to realize your specific goals and aspirations!!!

MY BACKGROUND

I am a licensed USA Cycling Certified Level 2 Coach and currently reside in Boulder, CO. I have been involved with endurance sports most of my life. I took up competitive swimming at a very early age, and migrated into cross-country running in my teenage years. While attending graduate school at the University of Georgia in 1996, I took up bicycle racing (both road and mountain bike) with the UGA collegiate cycling team. I instantly fell in love with both the beauty and challenge of the sport. It was at this time that I started to realize the importance of proper structured training and nutrition in regards to sports performance.

During this time I started to get more serious and technical with my training, and improvements came quickly. At first it was structured heart rate based training, but as power meter technology evolved and became less expensive, I was able to integrate wattage training into my workouts. I gained a much better understanding of how to train specific weaknesses, gauge my fitness over the season, prevent over training, calculate my specific energy (food) requirements for a given race/workout; and many other benefits to power based training.

My extensive experience with both Heart Rate and Wattage based training systems has given me the expertise to apply this knowledge to any cyclist who is looking to see improvements in their performance. In addition to coaching local athletes here in Colorado, I also work with cyclists from all over the United States.

COACHING PLANS

Each coaching plan is individually tailored and structured in the most beneficial manner according to YOUR goals; in order to realize the biggest improvements to your fitness.

All Personalized Coaching Plans offer the following:

  • Initial coach/athlete orientation to discuss past training and experience.
  • Goal setting and a periodized training program to achieve those goals.
  • Field testing to determine training zones (Heart Rate and/or Wattage).
  • Detailed daily workouts specific to each athlete’s goals and experience level.
  • Interaction with a coach in person, by phone, and/or via email
  • Use of www.trainingpeaks.com workout planner and interactive website
  • Guidance on race/ride strategy, mental preparation, equipment, and proper ride and recovery nutrition.
  • Monitoring of stress factors related to illness, injury, or mental stress that can affect performance.
  • A comprehensive cycling oriented strength program.

One on One Personal Coaching

$250/month

The One on One coaching plan provides the highest level of coach/athlete interaction and communication. The goal of the personalized One on One plan is to not only structure your training around your season goals, but to also allow for month to month and week to week revisions of your training as necessary to make sure everything stays on track. This is possible because of the close coach/athlete communication and my ability to revise your training as needed to take into account any “life factors” that might disrupt or affect your optimal training.

This plan allows for your training to be based around Heart Rate or Power based Training Zones to maximize the effectiveness and benefits of all your training rides. If using a downloadable Heart Rate monitor or Power meter device, I analyze everything about your rides and chart your progress. All of your metrics (HR, power, kJ, TSS, IF, and Training Stress Balance scores) will be tracked and analyzed over both macro- and mesocycles using CyclingPeaks Training Software and the unique Performance Chart Manager. Your Training Zones are re-calculated throughout the year as needed, and your workouts are updated to reflect changes in those zones. Your training log is reviewed daily, and workout revisions are provided as needed. Contact is unlimited through either email and/or phone.

3 Month - Individualized Coaching Plan

$125/month for a 3 month commitment

This plan provides a personalized and structured training program based upon your season goals and is set up similar to the One on One coaching plan. However, it is planned out 3 months in advance, compared to the monthly program that the One on One coaching allows. With this plan, at the end of every 3 month block, we analyze where your training is at and plan accordingly for another 3 month block. If you select this plan to get started, you can always switch over to the more interactive One on One coaching plan at anytime.

Client Testimonials

I have been working with Brad for 3 years now, and during that time period I have gone from a Category II amateur cyclist, to reaching my goal this year of riding Professionally. During the last 3 years, my abilities have progressed in all areas of cycling. Not only did we improve my strengths, but using a scientifically based power training program, we have also identified and improved on any weaknesses that had held me back in the past from making the next leap forward. I can strongly attest to Brad’s knowledge and coaching expertise.

Scott Nydam, Professional Road Racing Cyclist with the BMC Racing Team,
6 th overall - 2007 Tour of Georgia

Brad’s coaching has focused my training so that every ride has a purpose and I am able to train more efficiently and get more out of each ride. I have had my best 2 race seasons since working with Brad.

Paul Bauersfeld, Masters Category Road Cyclist, Nederland, CO

Working with Brad for the last few months has helped me to finally achieve some of the goals that have eluded me despite years of hard work. Brad’s training strategy has provided discipline to my workouts and balance to my busy life. He has tailored a well rounded plan that allows me to build strength, remain injury free, avoid overtraining, and gain performance while feeling more rested than ever before. The varied workouts and cross-training keep me motivated and challenged. Brad has been very honest, flexible, and quick to respond with the feedback necessary to adapt my plan to the demands of my busy life without sacrificing performance. I have really valued his patience and positive attitude.

Having recently placed 2 nd in a 24 Hour Solo mountain bike race, I was elated at how well prepared my body and mind were throughout the race. Trusting Brad’s guidance and perspective has helped me to see results and has given me confidence that I can perform at a high level without sacrificing balance in my life.

Jessica Woodings, 24-Hour Mountain Biker, Longmont, CO

I used to create my own training plans using articles from various magazines or websites, but my results were lackluster. Brad’s coaching is helping me to focus on my weaknesses and train more specifically for my goals. One of the biggest benefits of having Brad as a coach is that he helps me balance my workouts and incorporate appropriate rest and recovery. My attitude has always been that more is better but Brad is helping me to clean out the junk workouts and balance the intense workouts with adequate recovery to ensure I am getting the most benefit from the training effect. I am excited about the upcoming season and reaching my goals with Brad’s help.

Cindy Vanover, Mountain and Road Cyclist, Longmont, CO
