Eric Ray

Eric Ray

USA Cycling Level II Coach

I have been a competitive endurance athlete for over 20 years, during which time I’ve always tried to balance my athletic performances with both my home and work life. As a PhD in Atmospheric Sciences I use the scientific method every day in my job. I have applied that methodology to research and test techniques for my own training and diet. That has allowed me to optimize my own abilities and to develop training techniques that are proven, measurable and repeatable.

My coaching philosophy is to individualize training plans to reach the goals of each athlete. No two programs are alike and I continuously utilize quantitative information, such as power or heart rate data, as well as subjective feelings to help make sure each training plan is as effective as possible.

My primary racing experience has been as a cyclist, both road and mountain bike. I started as a collegiate racer at UC Berkeley and the University of Washington. I’ve competed in hundreds of races, including criteriums, road races, stage races, time trials track, and cross country mountain bike races. I’m an active Masters category 2 road racer, as well as an expert mountain biker and a USA cycling level 2 coach.

One on One Personal Coaching

$250/month

The One on One coaching plan provides the highest level of coach/athlete interaction and communication. The goal of the personalized One on One plan is to not only structure your training around your season goals, but to also allow for month to month and week to week revisions of your training as necessary to make sure everything stays on track. This is possible because of the close coach/athlete communication and my ability to revise your training as needed to take into account any “life factors” that might disrupt or affect your optimal training.

This plan allows for your training to be based around Heart Rate or Power based Training Zones to maximize the effectiveness and benefits of all your training rides. If using a downloadable Heart Rate monitor or Power meter device, I analyze everything about your rides and chart your progress. All of your metrics (HR, power, kJ, TSS, IF, and Training Stress Balance scores) will be tracked and analyzed over both macro- and mesocycles using CyclingPeaks Training Software and the unique Performance Chart Manager. Your Training Zones are re-calculated throughout the year as needed, and your workouts are updated to reflect changes in those zones. Your training log is reviewed daily, and workout revisions are provided as needed. Contact is unlimited through either email and/or phone.

3 Month - Individualized Coaching Plan

$125/month for a 3 month commitment

This plan provides a personalized and structured training program based upon your season goals and is set up similar to the One on One coaching plan. However, it is planned out 3 months in advance, compared to the monthly program that the One on One coaching allows. With this plan, at the end of every 3 month block, we analyze where your training is at and plan accordingly for another 3 month block. If you select this plan to get started, you can always switch over to the more interactive One on One coaching plan at anytime.

"Eric's direction was the key to unlocking my potential. This year was my first as a Pro mountain bike rider. Eric helped me focus and gave me the tools necessary to compete at the highest level in ultra endurance competition."

“I really wanted to thank you for all of the remarkable coaching advice you passed on to me during this most recent training season. I greatly appreciate the open communication and individualized training plan you developed for me. Not only has your guidance enhanced my overall fitness level, it has also improved my understanding of focused training, performance testing, and the importance of recovery. Your coaching and racing experience has taught me to train smarter and more effectively each and every ride. My power and pedaling efficiency have increased significantly this year resulting in improved race times. This, of course, has translated into having more fun on the bike. I look forward to the winter training and having an even better year of racing in 2009! Thanks again.”
